You may wonder a new writer, on a busy topic…but what for? Yes I had that in mind too but bear with me because I believe you will love my intro and hopefully cling on to some good series which I have in the pipeline for you.
My name is Shuaib a 30ish something family man who lives in Edinburgh, Scotland and who loves web tech! And have I started this writing thing a long time ago as well have dabbled in many different programming and data languages from desktop systems to mobile apps but my forte is web apps or internet tech especially API engineering. Just for the record I am qualified developer (BEng Honours Web Technology, 2011)
And to keep it concise and set expectation I will write about some old (still used!) but mostly new tech, systems and concepts.

In this first post I want to touch on the role of a full stack developer. It’s become the new kid on the block but what is it? And what does it involve for someone doing it day to day?
The full stack developer simply means a developer who can develop across the stack commonly this is the traditional 3 tier stack — backend ( database, backend app etc.), the middle tier ( controllers, middleman software or tools etc.) and finally the client ( front end UI or front end representation layers i.e. front end data only or app or website models). And that’s it really.
In a typical job or project this then means you’re expected to work on either and all three layers at any given time. One day you could be designing some CSS snippet for a Popup. Another it’s the backend layer and working how a certain piece of data in the database when received by the controller when/how/where it will trigger or show something else in the front end or manipulate other pieces of data in other tables etc. etc.
Also to add back before the 2010s the full stack developer most likely involved many tools and which many still use but they varied from very old IngressDB or MySQL to new tech (maybe HTML4 at the time and CSS2 ) and some JS. But over time since then full stack development was moving towards web tech only and now if you see it anywhere most likely there’s not going to be much or going to be much or any desktop tech involved.
Finally how can you go into and succeed as a Full Stack Developer?
Stay hungry for new knowledge and focused. I think these two are the most powerful in the ever changing world of this tech: web tech. I say this mainly for two reasons:
First and for most for new knowledge — new knowledge is useful whether it becomes useful or not in your field right away I believe it will help you in some way or another if you pick up say a new programming language or sign up to a hands on tutorial.
The new knowledge from point 1 in this field is valuable because the tools and tech change so quickly — which no one can stop — but if we learn new tools, programming languages, design patterns etc. it will keep us very well rounded and that’s what the industry is striving for and it will help you a lot stay above the line and become a lot more employable when changing jobs and lastly but not least new knowledge or the one who has skills in that are in need can ask for the best salaries.
