Aiming to share her knowledge of coping with unique challenges and balancing life as a caregiver for a child with special needs, Doctor Sarah Bridges PhD has launched a new website aptly named ‘Free Range Lives’. Now while this title conjures up images of chickens roaming free with other animals in a pasture, Dr Bridges has used this name because research indicates that livestock roaming free grow to be happier, healthier and stronger than their caged counterparts. Consequently, Bridges believes this is also true for people who live outside of any constraints.

At the age of four months Bridges son, Porter injured his brain. From then on, her life was a series of challenges, which she fought because she just didn’t believe that her son’s illness would be permanent. There had to be a cure, right?

After the break-up of her family and trying to be a good parent, Bridges stopped fighting and accepted her new role as caregiver. She then discovered that her son could help her to shape her life in a positive and empowering way.

Twenty-two years on, Bridges wants to share her knowledge with the rest of the world. Being the carer of a special needs child enables you to be resilient and to grow as a person; you learn to be happier and healthier and to balance life and meet challenges head-on. These lessons apply to anything in life and are usable by anyone – moms, dads, families, caregivers and even CEOs. The possibilities are endless.

Neuropsychology PhD, Sarah Bridges, who graduated from the University of Minnesota also holds an MBA. These qualifications and her life experiences enable Bridges to connect with a range of audiences from top level executives through to parents and caregivers.

When asked about her new website, Dr Sarah Bridges said, “The site details the triumphs and also misfires of a modern blended family of six children, two remarried parents and three dogs. You’ll discover like we do, what it means to live mindfully as we navigate our own paths in life. We find wisdom when these paths intersect – we connect – woman, man, child, parent or caregiver.”
