ObvioHealth has released a blog post on its website refuting the bulk of the misunderstandings regarding decentralised clinical trials (DCTs). ObvioHealth is a virtual research organisation (VRO) that is accelerating the much-needed digitalization of health innovation. It began in 2017 and employs technology innovation to address trial process inefficiencies. However, as ObvioHealth asserts, the company recognised both then and today that success would need the collaboration of seasoned clinical researchers and forward-thinking health technologists. This is what it takes to be the winning prescription for conducting clinical trials in an efficient manner.
ObvioHealth began the paper by discussing common misunderstandings regarding involvement in decentralised clinical trials. The primary issue is that many sponsors believe DCTs are less secure, they’re always completely virtual, the data is untrustworthy, and so on. These fallacies have the ability to stymie the industry’s progress by preventing sponsors from conducting optimum trials that provide superior data with improved retention and compliance rates.
Second, there is a widespread misconception that DCTs are not user friendly, which is far from the truth. The industry continues to believe that patients are incapable of using the technologies involved in DCTs. This idea is out of date, all the more so now that the epidemic has made a push for digital health. DCTs are gaining traction on a daily basis.
True, new tools often come with a learning curve. However, participants should be commended for their willingness to accept them. People aged 65 and older made up 23% of the 350 participants in ObvioHealth’s urine incontinence research. Women 65 and older adhered to the study procedure at a much greater rate than younger women: 79% of the 65-and-older group followed the protocol, compared to 59% of the younger population.
Indeed, since DCTs conduct research in patients’ homes, they may be more participant-centric than standard site-based investigations. The convenience of fewer in-person visits may assist study teams in recruiting a more diverse patient population, including historically underrepresented groups in clinical research.
Finally, although many feel that decentralised clinical trials eliminate human contact, they actually promote it. In a well-designed decentralised clinical study, technology complements rather than replaces human contact. Effective DCT teams take into account each touchpoint throughout the participant experience and provide assistance during each step to ensure patient-centric clinical trials.
For instance, ObvioHealth’s virtual site team—specifically, the Clinical Oversight and Coordination Hub (COACH)—humanises clinical studies by providing constant engagement and assistance to participants. COACH staff members communicate with patients using a variety of channels, including its chat platform, in-app alerts, and phone conversations. The integration of its virtual site team has been so effective that 100% of participants in four of ObvioHealth’s recent studies communicated with the COACH team.
It’s unsurprising that participants often prefer this form of engagement—the patient testimonies attest to this. Two patients said the following on the convenience of ObvioHealth’s DCT studies:
“I worked at two separate places. Because I was frequently on the go and was not always at home, it was simple. I could just go on my phone, do the task quickly, and continue on my way.”
“It was practical. I was able to contact someone despite the time difference.”
Access to research teams is simplified, which results in increased retention, engagement, compliance, and data collecting rates. This was proven successfully in one of the company’s latest clinical trials, which evaluated the effectiveness of an FDA-approved Class II medical device for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence and stress-predominant mixed urinary incontinence in women. Patients were engaged throughout the experiment by regular contacts with the COACH team, resulting in an 89% retention rate and a 93.5% ePRO compliance rate.
