Here’s some exciting news for poetry lovers everywhere. It’s a Kickstarter Campaign for a Haiku book series. The beloved Japanese poetry form is being used to write vivid descriptions of the cities of every country in the world, starting with the United States. Author, Andres Botero has written three books filled with haiku poetry highlighting the beauty and uniqueness of the following cities: New York City, Washington D.C. and Miami.
Each book will focus on what makes that particular location unique and highlight notable landmarks. Botero chose these cities because they “capture cultural diversity, nature and politics.” New York symbolizes freedom through landmarks like the Statue of Liberty. Miami evokes thoughts of sunshine and beaches. Washington D.C. radiates democracy. Publisher, Vasz Books, plans to create more books of haiku; publishing them “one city at a time.”
Many might recall learning how to craft a haiku poem in elementary school, but haiku is a beloved art for all ages. This ancient Japanese form of poetry consists of three verses. The first line is five syllables in length, followed by a seven-syllable verse, and then another line of five syllables. Each poem paints a picture, evokes an emotion or makes a statement in a beautiful yet simplistic way. Though it appears elementary, most would agree an excellent haiku is not easily attained. However, Botero has successfully done it!
With a Kickstarter goal of just under $7,000, you’ll want to partner with Botero. Vasz Books plans to print 250 copies per city which will easily be purchased. Backing starts at just $5 which provides a digital copy of the New York Haiku book. Larger backings include hard copies of the books, a personalized t-shirt, and even recognition as a Haiku Ambassador. The campaign will run until February 17th, and hard copies of the book will be available in March.
