Feb 21, 2018

BRUSSELS — The European Union's anti-trust watchdog is sounding the warning to business cartels by announcing fines totaling more than half a billion euros ($600 million) in three anti-trust cases. The EU Commission said Wednesday that it fined groups of maritime car carriers 395 million euros, spark plug suppliers 76 million euros and brake system suppliers 75 million euros for taking part in cartels. EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said "the three separate decisions taken today show that we will not tolerate anticompetitive behavior affecting European consumers and industries." In reference to its biggest fine, the Commission said Chilean maritime...

Italy warns of election threat as rival parties court Russia

Feb 21, 2018

ROME — Italian government officials are warning of possible foreign interference in the March 4 general election, sounding the alarm following the U.S. indictment of Russian trolls and evidence of Russian-sourced fake news on popular Italian platforms. Premier Paolo Gentiloni on Tuesday released Italy's annual security report, which aside from highlighting the threat of Islamic extremism, warned about online "influence campaigns" that aim to "condition both the sentiment and political orientation of public opinion, especially at election time." The report didn't mention Russia by name. But for months, U.S. and Italian analysts have warned that European elections are prime targets...

The Latest: Greece jails Palestinian over migrant smuggling

Feb 21, 2018

BRUSSELS — The Latest on migrant issues in Europe (all times local): 4:15 p.m. A Greek court in the northern city of Thessaloniki has convicted a Palestinian man of running a major migrant-smuggling ring and sentenced him to 13 years in prison. Judges ruled Tuesday that 29-year-old Jamal Owda was active during the height of Europe's immigration crisis, from July 2014 to December 2015 — when he was arrested in Britain following a Greek request. Migrants allegedly paid the ring 1,500 euros ($1,900) each to be taken from Greece to Serbia by road, at a time before Balkan countries closed...

In Italy's poorer south, populist party woos angry voters

Feb 21, 2018

NAPLES, Italy — In the Naples suburb of Torre del Greco, a port town at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, voters are steaming. Local seamen have jobs lost to foreigners willing to work for lower pay. The town is without a mayor, who was arrested months ago in a kickback scandal. Some 13,000 small investors lost their savings in the bankruptcy of a shipping company. Those woes only aggravate the daily difficulties of life in Italy's underdeveloped south, where youth unemployment runs 50 percent or higher, and the jobless rate among all ages is nearly double that in the relatively...

Saakashvili supporters march to demand Poroshenko step down

Feb 21, 2018

MINSK, Belarus — Several thousand supporters of deported Ukrainian opposition figure Mikheil Saakashvili marched through the center of Kiev on Sunday, demanding the resignation of President Petro Poroshenko. The protest included a nationalist faction, and some of its members broke windows at two Russian-owned banks and a Russian overseas agency after the march. Saakashvili, who was Georgia's president during 2004-2013, later became governor of Ukraine's Odessa region. He resigned in a dispute with Poroshenko and was stripped of his Ukrainian citizenship last year. He also lost his Georgian citizenship and is wanted in Georgia to face abuse of power charges....
