Migrant shooting highlights concern about Libyan coast guard

Sep 20, 2019

BRUSSELS — The death of a Sudanese man from a gunshot wound after a group of migrants fled from guards taking them to a detention center in Libya is raising fresh, troubling questions about the plight of people caught in the conflict-torn country and the role of the European Union-trained Libyan coast guard. The 28-year-old man was one of several migrants picked up by the Libyan coast guard in waters that are part of a vast search area the country registered last year under an EU-backed plan to hand off control of Mediterranean Sea rescues to Libya and to stop...

Women and children were among the three dozen people rescued Thursday evening. Many reported being Algerian and Libyan citizens. The Norwegian-flagged Ocean Viking picked up another 182 migrants from...

Migrants a top meeting topic for leaders of France and Italy

Sep 20, 2019

ROME — How Europe can better manage migrants is slated to be a key topic of discussion when Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte and French President Emmanuel Macron meet in Rome on Wednesday night. The Italian government has been demanding that fellow European Union countries routinely accept some share of the migrants that charity-run boats rescue in the Mediterranean Sea. Conte's talks with other EU leaders could go more smoothly since anti-migrant League party leader Matteo Salvini abandoned the premier's first coalition government. As interior minister, Salvini banned rescue vessels run by aid groups from bringing migrants to Italian ports. The...

Thousands gather to support Italian hard-liner Salvini

Sep 20, 2019

PONTIDA, Italy — Thousands of die-hard League voters from all over northern Italy are gathering in a town in the foothills of Lombardy as Matteo Salvini relaunches himself as opposition leader after a grave political miscalculation landed the party out of government. Backers wearing "Salvini Forever" scarves or "Salvini Premier" T-Shirts streamed into a meadow in the town of Pontida, near Bergamo, for the annual League rally. The town inspires nationalists as the birthplace of a medieval alliance that defeated a foreign emperor. Salvini is seeking to whip up his base in opposition to the 5-Star-Democratic Party government that took...

Ukraine: Director in prisoner swap backs jailed Russians

Sep 20, 2019

MINSK, Belarus — A Ukrainian film director included in a major prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia last week is speaking out for imprisoned Russians. Oleg Sentsov was freed after five years in a Russian prison on charges of plotting a terrorist act. He was flown to Kyiv on Saturday with 34 other former prisoners. Human rights groups alleged the charges were baseless and considered Sentsov a political prisoner. He said at a news conference on Tuesday that he would advocate for Ukrainians still held in Russian prisons, as well as for Russians jailed for opposing their government. Ukraine and...
